One of the main repairs
anyone ever needs make to a Sinclair ZX Spectrum is to replace the
keyboard
membrane after some of the keys fail.
The main problem with
replacing the keyboard membrane on the original rubber key Sinclair ZX Spectrum
(both the 16K and 48K models), is that to get at the keyboard membrane, you need
to carefully lever off the metal facing plate (or Keyboard Escutcheon Plate) which surrounds the rubber
keys. This plate is generally glued to the top of the ZX Spectrum
(although some later models incorporated metal clips to hold it in place).
As a result, lifting the plate can lead to it being bent or dented.
The plate also has the
Sinclair four stripe logo and several of the keywords emblazoned on it - these
are subject to wear and can easily get scratched or fade.
We have arranged for replacement Keyboard
faceplates to be made available. Manufactured in the UK from aluminium,
they are powder coated black, with silk screening to provide as close a replica
to the original as possible.
We supply them with a strong double sided
tape to adhere them to the original Spectrum casing, and these will help your ZX
Spectrum look as good as new.
Thanks to the original Spectrum designer,
Rick Dickinson for his assistance with this project - pictures of his Sinclair
design work appear on
Flickr. Thanks also to the engineers at
Mec-Com in Stafford for
their assistance in pulling this project together and making the faceplates
Make your Sinclair ZX Spectrum look new.....
